Peruvian football fans have been left in shock and bewilderment as they watched their country miss out on the 2018 World Cup.
With just days to go until the group stage of the World Cup, Peru failed to qualify from the group stages of their group stage as Argentina, Brazil, Germany and France advanced to the quarter-finals.
The news of Peru’s failing to qualify was met with disappointment from fans, who had been anticipating the country’s chances of making it through to the final.
“We were in the final in the second phase and we were a bit disappointed,” one fan told AFP.
“I don’t know if it’s the fans or the manager that is the problem, because we were expecting them to win.
We’re disappointed, but it’s nothing that is unique to Peru,” the fan added.
Peru lost to Germany in the group phase and beat Argentina in the quarterfinals of the 2018 Confederations Cup.
“They are very good, they’re the best in the world.
They are the best team in the history of the world, and they’ve got good players.
The whole team can play, but we need them to work hard,” a fan added, without naming the country.
Peruvian fans had been expecting the country to qualify for the World Cups finals.
The 2018 Confederions Cup is the second most prestigious football tournament in the Americas and is hosted by Argentina, which qualified for the tournament as a second-seed.
The South American country, which was the last World Cup-winning nation to qualify in the 2018 edition, had been expected to progress to the second round of the tournament, but fell to Argentina in both the group and final stages.
The nation has also qualified for a World Cup in 2022.
“This is the third year that we’re not going to the finals of the Confederations Cups.
The fans, I think, will know,” one of the country, who asked not to be named, told AFP.”
They are just so happy.
It’s the best feeling in the universe.
You can’t get anything more,” he added.
