The U.S. has qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 40 years, and they’ll be looking to break their winning streak of 16 consecutive wins to open up a three-game lead over Canada in the World Series.
Here’s everything you need to know about the USA.
The US has won six of their last eight games in this series, including a 1-0 win at home in the semifinals in 2015.
They’re currently tied with Mexico for second in the Hexagonal, two points ahead of fourth-placed Canada, but that’s the same amount of points they have scored in the previous 12 games.
This time around, they’re looking to continue their run in the CONCACAF Champions League, which includes the World Club Championship.
They’ll face Mexico on Thursday night at 7:30 p.m.
ET (5:30 a.m, ET) in Carson, California.
The USA has already clinched the Group of Death, the final group with at least two points, after beating Guatemala and Honduras in their first-round matches.
They then won two straight and then beat Ecuador in the final.
They’ve played six of the last seven group matches to earn at least a point.
The US is the only team to have beaten all four teams in that group, though it’s not a sure thing yet.
The final group matches of the tournament will be played on Saturday in Los Angeles.
This will be the third match in four days for both sides.
The USA is coming off of a 1,000-yard effort against Honduras, but will need to make up ground if they’re going to win in Carson.
The U-23s have won four of their previous five matches in Carson and will be looking for their second win in four matches.
Canada has had two straight losses to the U-20s in Carson as well as the U.20s last week, losing 3-0 at home to Mexico.
Both games were the last of the Group C. Both teams have a game in hand, and both teams have been playing a lot of attacking soccer in Carson in recent weeks.
They played the last three games of the CONCASO Champions League in the first round.
The Canadians have been without star forward Alex Steffen since May 11.
He will miss the match due to a broken left foot and ankle ligaments.
They were able to sign Steffen to a one-year deal after he was ruled out due to injury.
Steffen scored his first goal of the season against Honduras in the group stage, scoring in the 71st minute.
Steffens goal came after his team was down 3-1.
He’s now scored two goals in five matches, but he’ll miss this one.
The two sides have met three times in Carson already this season, and the USA has won all three of those matches.
Canada has not been able to score against the US this season and have won only one of their past four matches in the series.
The two teams have not faced each other since 2012.
The last time the two sides faced each another in Carson was the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup.
Canada is in a tough spot at the moment.
They play host to Mexico in Carson for the final two matches of Group C, and then host Costa Rica in a one off match.
This could be the last time Canada will play against the USA this year.
Canada will look to continue its run in CONCACACAF in the next two weeks, hosting Honduras on June 16 and then hosting Honduras in Panama.
The match is expected to be played in the rain.
The last time Canadian teams played in Carson came in 2015, when they lost to the USA in the semifinal of the Copa America Centenario.
This is the first match Canada has played in Costa Rica since 2010, and that was before the U20 World Cup in Canada.
Canada beat Costa Rica on home soil last summer, and Steffen and the Canadian defense were outstanding in the win.
