The world cup was a fantastic, historic event in Australia and South Africa, but it was also marred by an epidemic of violent crimes and a brutal government crackdown.
The first-ever world cup in Australia was marred with the murder of an Australian player by a fan.
And in South Africa fans were reportedly throwing petrol bombs at police officers, leading to a massive police response.

This year, Australia qualified via the knockout stages, while the USA were beaten in the round of 16 by Japan.
The first match at the 2018 World Cup saw Australia defeated 4-1 by Brazil.
Australia beat the USA 4-0 in the final in Stuttgart, Germany, and their last game was against Honduras.
Australian fans were outraged by the World Cup, and held rallies and protests in cities around the country.
Australia’s fans also took to social media to protest against the lack of respect shown to Australian athletes.
In September 2019, Australia’s men’s national team defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in the World Youth Championships in Amsterdam.
Australia’s women’s team defeated France 2-0 at the 2019 World Cup in Germany.
“I’m still not really sure what happened to me,” said midfielder Michael Ennis, who was injured during the match against France.
“I’m not sure how it happened, but when I went out there I was in the midst of a very emotional situation and I don’t know what to say.
It just hurts a lot.
It’s hard to explain it to a child, but I can’t understand why I was injured.”
Australian Football Federation president Tim Cahill said the response from the Australian government was “incredible”.
“We are committed to helping those injured in this situation as much as we can,” he said.
Cahill said it was important to take time to process the events of the past.
“We have an obligation to our fans, our players, our coaches and the people of Australia, who supported us throughout the tournament,” he told ABC Radio Melbourne.
But not everyone was satisfied with the response.
“We are a nation that is proud of our sports and we’ve come a long way and there’s still a lot of work to do, a lot more to be done,” said Australian Football League (AFL) commissioner Michael Whiting.
He added that the “unusual” events of a world cup were “the stuff of legend”.
“It is something we celebrate, but we have to take it with a grain of salt,” he added.
Whiting said he was concerned about the “hateful comments” directed towards the Aussie athletes.
“There is nothing more important than the welfare of our athletes and we are very proud of the work they do to improve our game, to support our players and to help our families, so it is a huge concern to us,” he stated.
As the 2018 FIFA World Youth Championship approaches, there are concerns that the violence and the negative responses from some of the fans have had an impact on the athletes’ training and preparation for the 2022 FIFA World Championship.
While the Australian athletes were able to enjoy the tournament and the games in general, some athletes are still having to put in the hard work of competing at the level they are capable of.
“It’s very stressful, it’s very frustrating,” said Australia’s left-back Luke Mutch.

You want to play for your country and I’m hoping that I’m able to put my hand up to help my country.”
The A-league will be the first competition to have a dedicated international squad after the 2019 season.
The A-listers will have to train at the same facilities and with the same players as the ABL team, while there are no international players on the A League roster.
Meanwhile, the Australian Rugby League has launched a new program called A-to-A to help Australians develop their game.
A-to A aims to help young Australians develop the skills they need to succeed in the international game.
Players from Australia, New Zealand, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia will be sent to the United States to train and prepare for the A20 World Cup finals.
It will run for one year and will include a week of training at the AFL’s Brisbane Training Centre in Sydney, where players will be provided with professional
