Iran’s squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, scheduled to kick off in late September, was announced earlier this month.
A list of 23 players, including five starters, was released earlier this week.
Iran will host the tournament for the first time, with Iran’s national team slated to face Ghana, Nigeria, Russia, Italy and Argentina.
In addition to the players announced on Wednesday, two more players, forward Ahmad Fakher and defender Mohammad Khademzadeh, were also named to the team.
Fakheh, a central defender who played for Iran’s under-19 national team and is one of Iran’s top talents, played a key role in the national team’s first-ever appearance at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup last month in Qatar.
He has represented Iran in five international tournaments and scored four goals in the last two.
Iran also has the opportunity to face Italy in their first match, which will be played in the city of Sochi, Russia.
Khademsadeh is one-time member of Iran World Cup squad.
He made his international debut for the national side in a 2-1 victory over Turkey in May and also scored a goal in the 1-0 win over Italy in November.
He was also part of the Iran national team that qualified for the 2019 FIFA U-20 Championship in Russia.
Iran has also secured a berth in the 2019 U-17 World Cup, where it will face Brazil, Colombia, Algeria, Morocco and South Korea.
Iran’s FIFA Under 20 World Cup roster includes players who were in Iran’s Under-17 and Under-18 squads, along with a number of players from Iran’s U-23 and Under 18 squads.
Fafih Etemad, the team’s goalkeeper, is the only Iranian player to have played in all four U-19 World Cups.
Iran, ranked No. 12 in FIFA’s FIFA rankings, will face a formidable challenge to secure a berth to Russia.
The nation has already lost its last four qualifiers and it will be a tough task to make it to the group stage.
